By What Authority? eBook Robert Hugh 18711914 Benson
This is one of those books that keeps surprising you even though you know how it has to end.The theological arguments are pretty simple but incredibly well phrased - I did lot of copy-paste, as I just had to save the way he worded a particular point or other. Obviously they center on Authority.
The characters are complex and the story is pure adventure start to finish.
RHB fast becoming a favorite author.
Good choice for anyone remotely interested in the English Martyrs. I think it is pretty historically accurate - I did a little research on several of the characters and it turns out many were real and accurately portrayed...at least according to Wiki.
bad choice for anyone looking for a reason to keep from being Catholic.

By What Authority? eBook Robert Hugh 18711914 Benson Reviews
This is an interesting story, taking place in England during the 16th century of the conflict between Queen Elizabeth's protestant religion, and the historic Catholic religion. The writing is a little flowery at times, but the scenes of the martyrdom of the priests, and the spiritual awakening of several of the characters, are riveting.
Robert Hugh Benson is simply an astounding writer (to say the least!)...and some other very well known writers (Chesterton, Knox, Sheen) were admirers of his work and took influence from him as well. This book, By What Authority?, is an easy yet profound work and I HIGHLY recommend anyone who may be interested in this topic, (or even if you somehow stumbled across this by accident!), to get it, read it, read it again, and then give it to someone else who will benefit from being enlightened by such a prolific author.
Benson continues his saga of persecuted England with an engaging, inspiring and Catholic sequel to his impressive The King's Achievement.
want to udestand the real conflick of of ingland an the Catolick Curch? and Englan?
read this book!
i liked the novel for its historical connection to 16th century English history and its portrayal of martyrdom in that period. On the negative side, the novel is somewhat wordy by today's standards and at times seems overly melodramatic.
Wow, what heartwarming truths this story has. The honor and integrity of the characters is the way I hold that the world shall be. Thank goodness for the dictionary as our vocabulary has declined in the past 100 years.
Not as good as Lord of the World, but an interesting read. As an American, I realized that the adherence to the Queen despite injustice was something I had trouble believing. I wish the book had ended with the parties escaping, and their descendents going to America. However, I believe Rev. Benson does not particularly like America (See book AntiChriVT Catholic Combat Guide to Lord of the World).
